Movie Info
The Premise
Set in 1930s Chicago, the film follows Frank (Christian Bale), a lonely, century-old monster who enlists the help of a mad scientist, Dr. Euphronious (Annette Bening), to create a companion. They reanimate Ida (Jessie Buckley), a murdered mob moll.
However, the "Bride" is no submissive mate. In a meta-twist, she is intermittently possessed by the ghost of Mary Shelley (also Buckley), transforming her into a vessel of feminist rage and existential defiance. The duo eventually goes on a violent, "Bonnie and Clyde" style crime spree across the Northeast.
Critical Consensus
The film currently holds a 62% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 55 on Metacritic, reflecting a sharp divide between those who love its audacity and those who find it incoherent.
The Good
Powerhouse Performances: Jessie Buckley is being hailed as the film's "electric" soul, delivering a feral, uninhibited performance. Christian Bale provides a surprisingly tender, vulnerable counterpoint as a monster obsessed with Hollywood musicals.
Visual Splendor: Critics praised the "maximalist" production design, Sandy Powell’s gothic-punk costumes, and the "ink-blot" makeup designs.
Daring Direction: Maggie Gyllenhaal is commended for taking massive creative risks, blending body horror, 1930s musical numbers, and gritty noir.
The Bad
Narrative Clutter: Many reviews argue the film "collapses under its own weight," juggling too many subplots—including a Chicago mob war, a police investigation (starring Peter Sarsgaard and Penélope Cruz), and a "Joker-like" social revolution.
Tonal Whiplash: The shift from slapstick humor and dance sequences to grim scenes of sexual violence and gore proved jarring for many.
The "Mary Shelley" Device: The recurring "possession" sequences, where Buckley adopts a posh British accent to deliver literary monologues, was described by some as "tiresome" and "embarrassing."
